Abstract: | Enormous advances have and will continue to be made in the provision of electronic navigation information. Moreover, ever-increasing precision and lowering costs provides the access to this technology to a wider marketplace and applications. However, one bottleneck in many applications is how to use this data, especially as only a small proportion of all maps and charts used in the world are available in any type of electronic format. A rapidly-emerging technology named Yeoman links electronic navigation data together with the conventional geographical database of paper charts and maps. The paper will develop the human factors both in using electronic data and inputting geographic instructions into electronic systems, drawing heavily on experience with installed Yeoman technology products in marine, airborne and landbased applications. |
