GPS Sea Set Integrated Onboard a 637 Class Submarine

Joseph J. Perkowski and John G. Kowalski Jr.

Abstract: The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System sea set (AN/WRN-6(V)7) was installed onboard the USS GUITARRO (ssn-665) for a Technical Evaluation (TECHEVAL) and Operational Evaluation. The authors have been involved from the outset with the installation, checkout and TECHEVAL of the GPS integrated system on board. The GPS system, which replaced the AN/WRN-5 NAVSAT receiver on the USS GUITARRO is integrated with an inertial navigation system which has been appropriately modified and also with a Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) Distribution System. The USS GUITARRO is the first submarine in the US Navy to have a completely integrated GPS navigation System. The GPS sea set on the USS GUITARRO receives satellite si ah via three GPS modified antennas, namely: the AN/BRA-%B, the OE-lSIB/BRQ and the Type 18 penscope antenna. An NTDS data interface was used to transfer navigation data between the GPS equipment and the submarine inertial navigator. The GPS equipment provides the inertial system with position and time data which is used to update the inertial unit Kalman filter parameters. The inertial system provides the GPS equipment with position, velocity and attitude data which is used to improve satellite acquisitions and position fix computations. The GPS equipment is supplied wltb a Binary Coded Decimal Time Code signal and a one pulse per second signal from the PlTI system. When referenced to a very accurate cesium beam frequen satellite acquisitions. 2i standard this can be used to improve addition, the GPS equipment provides a one pulse per minute synchro -7 frequency standard that can be use signal to the cesmm beam to reset the cesmm umt to Umversal Tie Coordinated. Integration of the GPS sea set with the submarine inertial navi ator and with the time distribution system on the USS G&ARRO has resulted in many improvements over the existing AN/WRN-S NAVSAT receiver.
