The Effect of GPS Availability on Submarine Renavigation

Jonathan C. Howland, David W. Jourdan

Abstract: The increasing availability of the Global Positioning System (GPS), brought about by the growth of the available satelliteconstellation, has raised questions about the effect of this increased availability on submarine renavigationt efforts. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of GPS availability on renavigation, and to increase understanding of the role which external satellite fixes play in renavigation processing. It is not expected that the improved accuracy of GPS will greatly affect the accuracy submarine renavigation, but there may be some secondary effects on operational procedures.
