Deriving Navigational History from Surviving Artifacts

Saul Moskowitz

Abstract: Through his handling of a large assortment of actual instru- ments, original publications, and manuscript documents, the deal- er in antique scientific instruments (particularly if he also comes from a working background in technology and the sciences) can bring a unique level of understanding to particular subjects and developments in the history of these technologies and sciences which may escape the more traditionally oriented academician. Here 1 hope to add to the History of Navigation through the stu- dy of unique objects rather than through a reorganization of the standard secondary and hereto acceptable primary sources. The result will not take the form of a comprehensive and balanced account, but should introduce a level of perception which may otherwise be lacking.
