The Coordinate Datum Problem and Its Solution

Vidal Ashkenazi, John Storey

Abstract: The paper reviews the current state-of-affairs, terms of coordinate reference systems and datums, within the member states of Eurocontrol, European Organisation for the Safety of Navigation. Details are given of a software package, which was commissioned by Eurocontrol from Nottingham University, for transformation of coordinates between various national and international geodetic datums. At present, each country has a national geodetic datum which is used for its own national mapping, and for positioning navigation aids, radars, points, etc, in terms of geographical coordinates. Although access to the software package alleviate the problem, it does not solve it and even lead to serious difficulties. The paper concluded by giving details of a Pilot Project aims at a complete and rigourous solution coordinate datum problem.
