Combat Maneuver Training Center (CMTC) High Dynamic Player Integration

Abstract: The U.S. Army is actively pursuing the integration of the Global Positioning System (GPS) into its Combat Training Centers (CTCs) for Time Space Position Information (TSPI). The first real-time application of GPS for U.S. Army CTC training will occur at the Combat Maneuver Training Center (CMTC) in Hohenfels, Germany. The Army expects this to become the standard at all CTCs. GPS TSPI constitutes a small, but very significant, portion of the CMTC system operation. In addition, the U.S. Army and the prime contractor for CMTC (Cubic Corporation) are performing an on-going special task for integrating rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft into the CMTC instrumentation system. Initial study work has focused on data availability, weapons engagement simulations, data link capabilities, and airborne player unit processing tradeoffs. A major result of the study was the application of a GPS-based state vector solution to perform real-time weapon simulations for rotary-wing aircraft. Such state vector solutions have been used in terrestrial-based multilateration air combat training range systems with a high degree of training realism. CMTC will advance these simulations by using GPS TSPI as part of the solution. This will provide rotary-wing aircraft pilots with a similar degree of training as their fixed-wing counterparts. To appreciate the context of this GPS range application, a more complete explanation of the overall system is necessary. This paper presents an overview of the CMTC instrumen-tation system and the study methodology that has led to the current program status. The detailed implementation and system integration of high dynamic players will be part of the next phase of CMTC development.
