GPS-Inertial Navigation for the Advanced Interdiction Weapon System (AIWS) Flight Demonstration

Mark Youhanaie and Kevin E. Rudolph

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the design and testing of the GPS-Inertial guidance system developed by Hughes Missile Systems Group (MSG) in support of a flight demonstration performed at the Naval Weapons Center (NWC) in China Lake, California, with McDonnell-Douglas Missile Systems Company (MDMSC). The primary objective of this effort was to demonstrate GPS-Inertial guidance accuracy in a representative AIWS free flight vehicle. On December 10, 1990, a fully guided vehicle was successfully launched from an F-4 aircraft and flew autonomously to within GPS Precise Positioning Service (PPS) accuracy of a designated target location using GPS Inertial guidance.
