Evaluation of GNSS Receiver Correlation Processing Techniques for Multipath and Noise Mitigation

A. J. Van Dierendonck, Michael S. Braasch

Abstract: The Narrow Correlator Delay Lock Loop (DLL) was introduced to GPS receivers in 199 1. Except for slight variations to the technique, it has been the standard for accurate GPS CIA code tracking ever since. Recently, other techniques have been suggested that show promise for even more multipath mitigation. That is called progress. However, these improvements do not always come without giving up some other receiver performance. For example, some mitigation techniques reduce the noise performance, and, along with it, reduce interference mitigation. This is very important in airborne precision landing applications, where known multipath mitigation techniques provide very little or no reduction in multipath tracking errors compared to conventional one-chip spacing. Yet, noise performance is very important. Whereas the reduction of tracking errors due to multipath is very important in most applications, this importance sometimes overshadows the necessity of reduction of noise errors. Consequently, developers of multipath mitigation signal processing techniques tend to neglect this other very important performance factor. This neglect may be by omission or by design. There are also some other performance factors such as tracking and reacquisition robustness (loss of lock performance) to be considered. In this paper, we address not only the multipath reduction performance of these various signal processing techniques, but also address the other important but neglected performance factors. This leads to a comparison of the various techniques, showing the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques versus application.
