Abstract: | NOAA’s Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) has been responsible for charting the coastal waters of the United States since 1807 to facilitate safe and efficient marine navigation. In carrying out this responsibility, C&GS has focused, traditionally on the production of paper nautical charts and U. S. Coast Pilot volumes updated on a frequency that responds to critical change. The appearance of compact and powerful computer technologies during the past decade has created a new media for the delivery of the marine navigational information depicted on the nautical chart. With the modernization of its chart production system and with its leadership in establishing international hydrographic data standards, C&GS is playing a critical role in the development and distribution of certified Electronic Navigational Chart (BNC) data products to support new requirements for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). |
