Abstract: | The U.S. Air Force has, for the last several years, compared the performance of navigation systems under development to the performance of a navigation system test standard known as the Completely Integrated Reference Instrumen- tation System (CIRIS). CIRIS achieves an ac- curate navigation solution by optimally combin- ing information, using an Extended Kalman fil- ter (EKF), from three major subsystems: iner- tial navigation system (INS) information, baro- metric altitude information, and range and range- rate information from precisely surveyed ground transponders. CIRIS currently uses a.n eleven error-state real-time EKF to evaluate INS per- formance on various airborne testbeds. The nav- igation solution produced by CIRIS will soon be inadequate as the standard a.gainst which fu- ture navigation systems can be tested. This pa- per proposes an enhancement to CIRIS referred to as the Enhanced Navigation Reference Sys- tem (ENRS) which takes advantage of newer ring laser gyro strapdown INS (LN-93) tech- nology, ground transponders from the current CIRIS, and differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) measurements. Analysis conducted us- ing the Kalman filter development package known as Multimode Simulation for Optimal Filter Eval- uation (MSOFE) is presented. A large order baseline trwth model for the ENRS is developed and full- and reduced-order Kalman filters are de- signed. Results suggest that the proposed ENRS with DGPS aiding can provide a navigation po- sition solution at least one order of magnitude better than the current CIRIS. |
