Abstract: Two independent Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) arc under development and are planned to be operational in the near future: the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) of the United States of America and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), developed by the Soviet Union. Both systems provide excellent capabilities for accurate real time positioning, for an unlimited number of users, under all weather conditions, all the time, all around the world. Used in a differential mode (D- GPS/GLONASS), even decimeter-level accuracies are possible in real time, demonstrated impressivly with a D-GPS based system during several automatic landings of an aircraft by the Institute of Flight Guidance and Control at the Technical University of Braunschweig since July 1989 (Jacob, Sch&rzer), 1990). Whereas a lot of experience exists about the use of GPS, there is only a limited knowledge available about GLONASS. Since September 1991, aerodata Flug- meDtechnik Braunschweig, the majority shareholder of Avionics Center Braunschweig, has access to GLONASS receivers ASN-16 built in Russia. Since llrst tests have shown very promising results, the German Ministery of Transportation has initiated an experimental study to investigate GLONASS for diffe- rent applications during car and flight tests. The use of GLONASS as standalone system, the realization of D- GLONASS, and the combination GPS/GLONASS/INS are part of the study. Due to the experience with GPS/INS integrations it is planned to realize the system combination on a raw data basis. The paper presents the concept of the experimental study and first test results.
