Abstract: | With the continued miniaturization of GPS equipment, improvement of processing algorithms, and population of the full GPS constellation, the focus of GPS is shifting from a supporting role to the implementation role. The concept of “Field to Finish” is common in a traditional surveying context. The concept is magnified and expanded when the integration of GPS and GIS is carried to its full potential. “Field is Fii reflects the concept that, for a majority of GIS implementations, the process of gathering the salient information constitutes the entire process of creating a GIS. A description of the impact that GPS has had on the GIS community is provided. Examples of the “Field is Finish” concept in the design of the data gathering process and GIS implementation in utility mapping and E-911 support are provided. |
