Digital Image Acquisition and Processing for Photogrammetric/GIS Applications

Roger H. Greene

Abstract: GIS systems have allowed the organization of many types and qualities of data in a single place..xady for immediate access, retrieval and analysis. Too often layers of data are compiled from existing somes whose uses may have been quite different fmm the ultimate requirements demanded in projects dlizing GIS technologies. Data acquisition and promsing considerations have not always kept pace or been consistent with requirements for final products derived from a GIS enviromn ent. Time and cost considemtions often precludetheuseofdataacquiredtoaconsistentsumdardand force the inclusion of data sets that may render ultimate lesults nlargidy useful. Addres&g these problems requires the examination of czonventional data cdlecrion methods as linked steps, accomplished within a GIS framework. Utilizing recent technol~ developmeuts in several fiekls, the KESTRELm Digital Image Acquisition System hasbeen developed to serve the mapping and GIS communities. Incowg simultaneous mktion of GPS and high resoltion stereo digital image data, the enfire system (including post- pmcesing)may&cethetimerequiredto prepare photogmmmetric quality products @lanime& and topographic maps; orthophotos) by as much as 50%. Effective elimination ofthc need for precision aerial cam- eras, analyticalstenzoplo&ersandorthophotogenemtion systems is achieved.
