The WILD GPS Surveying System 200: Highlights and Performance

Richard J. Gough, Bijan Jalali

Abstract: The WILD GPS Surveying System 200 is the latest generation of GPS equipment from Leica featuring many innovative and unique advances in GPS hardware and software technology. System 200 has been designed for surveyors. The primary design goals were efficiency and ease of use. System 200 consists of the WILD SR299 GPS Sensor, the WILD CR233 GPS Controller, the SKI post-processing and survey preparation software, and associated accessories. This paper presents a general introduction to the features and the performance of the System 200. Besides this general overview, a few specific technical details are discussed in greater depth. One of these features is the time recovery capability of the WILD SR299 GPS Sensor. This guarantees that every WILD SR299 GPS receiver takes measurements synchronized to GPS system time within 100 to 500 nanoseconds. This capability is of vital importance considering the effects of selective availability (SA) and its consequences for surveying with non-synchronized receivers. A second feature discussed in the paper is the unique performance in tracking L2-phase when the Y-Code is transmitted. The WILD SR299 GPS Sensor employs a Magnavox-proprietary squaring technique that enables the acquisition of the second frequency with an improved signal-to-noise ratio compared to the classical squaring technique. In addition, using this technique provides code measurements even when the P-Code is not available. The “Fast Ambiguity Resolution Approach” (FARA) featured by the WILD SKI post-processing software package enables ambiguity-resolution for short baselines with just a few minutes of Ll and L2 phase measurements. Results from actual field data demonstrate the excellent performance of this new technique as well as the performance of System 200 as a complete surveying package.
