Abstract: In Japan, GPS receivers as position sensors for car navigation have been installed in luxury cars manufactured by several motor car companies. This tendency is expected to expand from luxury cars to compact cars and the number of cars equipped with GPS receivers will drastically increase. GPS receivers for mass produced cars are required to have higher performance, lower cost. higher reliabiltiy and higher serviceability than conventional GPS receivers. Therefore, not only a GPS receiver itself but also production line and serviceability at car dealer shops are very important. So, it is insufficient to design a GPS receiver only from the view point of a GPS receiver itself just like in the ordinary way and it is very important to designa GPS receiver in very careful consideration of production line and serviceability. As measures of the requirements, we employ the following architectures in designing a GPS receiver: (1) I-channel parallel receiver for high performance. (2) MMIC. ASIC and adjustment-free receiver for low cost. (3) PMEA for high reliability. (4) Diagnostic functions for high serviceability. Moreover, we employ the following in production line. (5) Automatic production line tests for high reliability. We believe that this type of GPS receiver will be positively adopted by car manufacturers, thereby contributing to expanded use of car navigation systems in the future.
