Abstract: | SATNAV (Satellite Navigation) Differential GPS (DGPS) services provide real-time GPS corrections to users equipped with SATCOM transceivers. The DGPS corrections are provided from one or more base reference site(s) and uplinked from a earth station to a geosynchronous system of satellites. The SATNAV DGPS corrections are broadcasted down to users equipped with SATCOM transceivers. Users equipped with a GPS unit are then able to apply the SATNAV DGPS corrections to their own GPS navigation solution. The SATNAV GPS corrections can provide under 10 meters of accuracy when the user is located within an area up to 1,000 kilometers away from the base reference site. This type of DGPS corrections work well for GPS applications that remain within the base reference site coverage area. SATNAV DGPS works in environments where more conventional methods of DGPS are not possible. SATNAV DGPS services are replacing older shore-based RF communication DGPS broadcasts. SATNAV DGPS service provides GPS corrections without the usual associated problems of conventional DGPS. However, depending on which SATNAV DGPS service is used, there may or may not be DGPS reference station coverage for a given area. The SATNAV equipment required to receive the DGPS broadcast may also limit in what applications the SATNAV DGPS service will work. |
