User Interface Design for Route Guidance

Aaron Marcus

Abstract: Effective presentation of route guidance and navigation maps of intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS} provides a challenge to graph& designers. As user interface designers, they must account fdor new paradigms of visual communication and interaction. limited color and typography, low resolution, small display area, large amounts of data, and the unique demands of the vehicle/highway environment are among the constraints that they must consider. The author reporls on work by his firm that seeks to develop such displays for a Motorola-sponsored IVHS project.
