Guidance and Navigation of the F-117A Nighthawk

Donald L. Coutant and John C. Wacker

Abstract: Honeywell Guidance and Navigation Operation in St. Petersburg, FL, provided the F-l 17A Nighthawk with hardware and software for precision navigation and steering. The SPN/GEANS is currently being used for precision navigation, but the aircraft will soon be upgraded with an RLG system. Honeywell is currently designing enhancements to improve the performance of the Standard RLG Inertial Navigation System while maintaining F-l 17A capabilities. As a part of its F-117A computer software activity, Honeywell has expended a major effort in developing, from scratch, a comprehensive steering module that is tailored to the mission requirements of the F-l 17A. This module plays an important role in the fulfillment of a mission and is the subject of evaluation by individuals with a wide diversity of backgrounds.
