Miniature IMU Based on Micro-machined Coriolis Sensors

Rand H. Hulsing II and Douglas C. MacGugan

Abstract: Sundstrand Data Control (SDC) has spent several years developing Coriolis sensors for simultaneous sensing of inertial rate and linear acceleration. Our present development efforts are focused on producing a small size, relatively inexpensive three axis IMU utilizing the performance benefits of micro-machined silicon accelerometers. This paper reviews the experience gained through our earlier developments and summarizes progress on producing the next generation micro- accelerometer based inertial measurement unit. Reference 1 reviews initial progress in our Coriolis sensor development efforts. Our new micro-machined Coriolis sensor has been named $XIRAS”.
