Route Guidance Technology for Automatic GIS Database Maintenance

Clay Collier, Donald R. Sweetnam

Abstract: Automotive route guidance and vehicle tracking systems are being tested and deployed in markets around the world. A key element required for this technology is an accurate digital geographic database. The problem of developing and maintaining these databases is being addressed by public, private, and academic institutions. The authors present a method of automatic database maintenance that can be extended to a complete partnership between public and private enterprise. Route guidance systems contain positioning sensors, a digital geographic database, and software that performs map-matching. The construction process for this database includes the use of USGS materials, aerial photographs, and public, private, and government source data. The construction and maintenance process must also rely heavily upon field research and verification. By introducing a tracking log to a route guidance system, much of this research and verification can be automated. The authors review the process of geographic database construction, the components and behavior of automotive route guidance systems, and illustrate the usefulness of the route guidance systems as a feedback loop for database verification and maintenance. The authors then present a model that extends this approach to include commercial market products and public vehicles in an automated GIS verification role. This automatic model consists simply of downloading error logs and does not require any interaction or effort on the part of vehicle operators.
