Abstract: | With the basic design of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers having solidified, the present technology emphasis is towards miniaturization. The Special Purpose Processor Development Group, Mayo Foundation and the Communications Products Operations, Motorola, in a collaborative effort, designed a GPS receiver based on the Motorola handheld receiver design utilizing various Multichip Module (MCM) technologies to achieve the overall smallest embeddable commercial receiver available by maximizing packaging density. This paper describes these initial efforts, the overall design concept, the MCM technologies used, the required fixturing, and the planned progression for future development towards a micro-miniature embeddable commercial GPS receiver. |
