Abstract: | The current financial situation of the airlines is well known. New technologies, including those based on GNSS and digital communications, offer opporlamitia for near- and long-term financial gain. Aviation applications of these technologies include precision approach navigation, oceanic navigation, and air-ground communications for dii%rential GPS corrections, as well as for ATC and airline operational communication. The paper presents results of an ARINC-conducted GPS accuracy study and of the Pacific Engineering Trials. It also describes the development of a new low-cost integrated ACARS/DGPS solution. The paper concludes with a discussion of the challenges facing the airline community, and how these might be addressed. Stepwise migration to new technologies offering near-term benefits is recommended. |
