TAMPS and GPS -An Effective Partnership

Abstract: The DOD Minimum Avionics Requirements (MAR) for Global Positioning System (GPS) Sole Means of Navigation delineates the minimum GPS avionics system performance standards for operation of GPS equipped DOD aircraft in the National Air Space. One requirement is for the avionics system to store and utilize a validated navigation data base. The Tactical Aircraft Mission Planning System (TAMPS) is currently being modified to accomplish this function, In addition, TAMPS will provide an electronic means to prepare flight plans prior to flight. The TAMPS/GPS capability represents a large step towards a paperless cockpit. After the TAMPS GPS modification is complete, the TAMPS operator will be able to: l Read the Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File (DAFIF) Worldwide Data Base into TAMPS via a CD-ROM: Airbases, Runways, NAVAIDS and Waypoints l Filter the data base, creating large-scale primary and small-scale reversionary files l Generate up to twelve flight plans with up to fifty waypoints each l Output the primary file, reversionary rile, flight plans, MagVar Coefficients, MagVar Table and GPS Almanac Data to a Mission Data Loader (MDL) solid state cartridge The flight crew would then carry the MDL cartridge out to the aircraft and insert the cartridge into a MDL receptacle whereupon the data will be available to the aircraft navigation system via a MIL-STD-1553B Data Bus. This paper will discuss the current TAMPS system, the Defense Mapping Agency @MA) DAFIF Data Base, the TAMPS/GPS capabilities, the utilization of the data files aboard the aircraft, and program status.
