Abstract: | Annex 11 to The Convention on International Civil Aviation requires that Air Traffic Service (ATS) units must be given relevant information about the navigational aids used by aircraft in their sector. The information is needed so that ATS can maintain a safe and expeditious service for air traffic operations in their airspace. This paper examines the link between navigational aid status and air traffic procedures as it might be affected by GPS. The ideal reliability characteristics of a satellite navigation system are considered from the point of view of an air traffic control officer (ATCO). These are then compared with the performance of GPS. Finally, the paper considers the best way of notifying this status information. Several changes to the present NANU system are recommended. |
