Advanced Maneuvering Re-entry Vehicle Guidance

Ronald Harris and Roy Setterlund

Abstract: This paper presents error budgets for GPS aided inertial systems for two bounding maneuvering reentry vehicle trajectories; a near-ballistic, minimum-maneuvering trajectory and a long glide trajectory. A problem unique to reentry applications is plasma generated as the vehicle passes through the atmosphere. The effects on L-band signals of plasma generated during reentry have not been quantified to the authors’ knowledge and hence they are treated pammetrically. Some thoughts about GPS receiver design are also presented.
