Assessment of the Potential of Satellite Navigation Systems for Europe: An Interim Report

Abstract:	Under contract of the Commission of the European Communities, the author is managing a study which shall provide an “Assessment of the potential of satellite navigation systems and the European dimension of their utilisation”. This work has been going on since January 1993. An interim report has been completed. It’s contents form the background for this paper. After a short discussion of European institutions involved in satellite navigation application, an overview of application areas is given. The institutional aspects of satellite navigation application in Europe are discussed. A European initiative with regard to the space and control segment of a civil navigation satellite system is considered.
