Abstract: | There are a wide variety of differential GPS services available in and around the North Sea, and many of these are using different approaches to obtain, and to describe the quality of, their final positions. The use of a height aiding observable, the inclusion of low elevation satellites, and the combination of solutions from different reference stations are just a few examples of the variations in the solutions from DGPS packages. It is of concern to all the service users that the subtleties of these solutions are often not released, and that an independent investigation into the processes being used has not taken place. Moreover many of the current packages are using arbitrary quality measures (such as DOPs and ‘figures of merit’) which are not based on proper stochastic models and which are hard to relate to practical DGPS operations and to modern offshore surveying specifications. This papers presents a strategy for quality control and assessment recently recommended by the United Kingdom Offshore Operators’ Association (UKOOA) and goes on to investigate the importance of a variety of modelling problems related to real-time GPS processing and quality assurance. |
