Digital Mapping System (DMS) for Helicopter Integrated with GPS Receiver

Abstract:	Helicopters are normally operated in visual flight environments. To make the flight safe and efficient, various apparatuses are required to support the pilot. Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. have developed a digital mapping system by use of a GPS receiver for this purpose. This system provides pilot with real time flight map in 3-D presentation. Mapping data is stored in the database. It has a function to display and alert the dangerous areas by comparing an altitude of own flight course with the surrounding area. Study was made to give necessary information to the pilot at a timely manner. Also study was made to downsize the system for installation on a cockpit of a helicopter and as a result, a compact GPS receiver and a display control unit with color LCD were developed. The system utilizes a GPS receiver as a position fixing sensor. ft is possible to display a position of the helicopter with an altitude information on a map of any place in the world where a digitized 3-D database is available. It also displays, in vector format, the flight track, planned flight route, major roads, railways, rivers, other prominen! features with overlays of names of places, flight support stations on the map. This paper describes the configuration, overall technical specifications, samples of displays and installation on a helicopter.
