A GPS Receiver Optimized for Land Vehicles

Roderick C. Bryant

Abstract: The paper describes a GPS receiver designed specifically for the demanding Land Vehicle application. The design yields exceptional performance together with features intended to simplify the system integration task for Automatic Vehicle Location and Vehicle Navigation applications Key performance features are: a) Fast signal acquisitionlreacquisltion. Use of an FFT-based technique permits exceptional performance especially in the critical case of reacquisition following loss of all satellites due to obscuration. b) Robust tracking algorithm. The carrier tracking is based cn frequency feedback which tolerates the large clock deviations produced by shock and vibration on rough roads. c) Clock-Insensitive navigation filter. The tracking performance is matched wiih a Kalman filter design which withstands significant clock errors. The receiver implementation employs a Plessey GPlOll monolithic front end, a code correlator ASllC and a DSP. The DSP firmware incorporates an efficient real-time multi-tasking kernel permitting carrier signal processing, Falman filtering, satellite positioning and management, datum transformations, grid conversions, navigation functions, serial messaging and menu-driven keypad/display functions all to be performed by the one processor.
