Tracktag

Peter Brown, Bruce Johnson

Abstract: TRACKTAG” is a device that uses a low cost GPS- based sensor, the TIDGET”, to record vehicle position histories. This sensor is ideally suited to fleet management applications such as fuel-tax proration, driver performance/safety monitoring, and incident recording. Variants of the TIDGET sensor are also being developed for a number of non-vehicle applications, including animal tracking, covert monitoring, and fishing boat monitoring. In all of these applications, real-time reporting of position information is not needed. Instead, a record is required of position (or position and velocity) histories that can be subsequently downloaded. The TRACKTAG uses a proprietary technique to acquire periodic snapshots of raw GPS data for storage to internal memory. This raw GPS data is subsequently processed by a central workstation to provide a time history of the navigation solution, including independent velocity information. This approach allows the vehicle-mounted sensor to be a low cost product with extremely low power consumption, all-in-view navigational capability, and high tamper immunity with the potential for extremely small (matchbook) size. The required accuracy of the navigation solution impacts the data storage requirement and can vary from a few hundreds of meters to 10 meters (95%). This paper is the first public disclosure of NAVSYS Corporation’s TRACKTAG family of GPS-based sensors capable of providing position history tracking extremely low cost. The first section of the paper provides background and application information. The second section presents technical details of the TRACKTAG approach, including the sensor and processing equipment. The third section presents performance information and discusses the various performance tradeoffs. The conclusion discusses the status of this sensor family and expected developments in the coming year.
