The Use of GPS on British Rail

Abstract: For several years now British Rail has been testing various systems which include GPS as a positioning element. The paper looks briefly at the history of GPS on Britain’s railways, and details some of its uses. BREL, Derby has been responsibleforimplementation of a system capable of monitoring both the engineering state of the train and the number of passengers on board. Data is stored on board the train and downloaded at intervals via a Cellular Telephone link using data modems. Dataisused inavarietyofwaysforincreasing efficiency of the rail a service. Some of the experience gained and performance achieved will be presented, along with some of the practical problems encountered along the way.
