The Equivalence of TOA and TDOA RF Transmitter Location

Abstract: The error propagation in time-of-arrival (TOA) and time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) line-of-sight ra- dio transmitter location is investigated. Minimum and overdetermined observer geometries are consid- ered. The formal apparatus necessary to ohtain the position fix by either method is given. The TOA and TDOA position fixes and propagated covariance ma- trices are shown to coincide under rather unconstrain- ing conditions. Error propagation results obtained in a TOA simulation of radio frequency (RF) transmit- ter location are discussed.
