Abstract: | The Russian Global Navigation Satellite System GLONASS is now a firm candidate to become an alternative or a complement to GPS. However, the system characteristics and reliability is largely un- known by most of the possible users of GLONASS. Today it is possible to find more and better infor- mation about GLONASS in the public media, journals and also through INTERNET, but still the information is scarce, compared with what is available for GPS. As part of our activities regarding GLONASS, in DLR-DFD Neustrelitz, we are working towards a continuous real-time GLONASS integrity monitoring, which would be available via World Wide Web (WWW) to external users, with continuously updated information about the GLONASS satellites visibility, status, and data quality. The system is integrated by two permanent monitoring receivers, one from the Russian Institute of Space Device Engineering, and another from the US company 3s Navigation, The development of the inte- grity and information system is following sequential steps. It started with the availability of GLONASS almanacs via FT’P. In the next stages, which are the subject of rhis article, we have implemented an automatic inlegrity evaluation routine, which provides information about the status of the GLONASS satellites and about the quality of the data transmitted by the satellites. The system is still in a development period, but we have increased the rate of updated information available from the integrity algorithms, from the daily set-up to a continuous (although not yet properly real-time) update when new information is generated, with an update period of about one hour. This information system is implemented in our FIP and WWW servers, and the information will be freely available to the general public during the initial test period. The extension of the system towards a proper real-time evaluation and the availability of further information about the system is under development. |
