Performance Analysis of an Integrated SAR/GPS/INS Targeting and Navigation System

Jeff R. Layne, Randall N. Paschall

Abstract: This paper presents the design and analysis of inte- grating global positioning system (GPS), inertial naviga- tion system (INS), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The intent of this research is to establish an optimal per- formance baseline against which other integration approaches can be compared, and to predict the perfor- mance of the proposed targeting system. The analysis pre- sented here is based on a well-tuned, full-order extended Kalman filter. Both the navigation and targeting aspects of the inte- grated INS, GPS, and SAR are investigated. For the navi- gation analysis, various combinations of SAR and GPS aiding are considered. For targeting analysis, both “rela- tive” and “absolute” targeting is investigated. The simula- tion results indicate a theoretical possibility of obtaining both aircraft position and absolu,te target position with a CEP of 10 ft.
