Abstract: | The U.S. Navy is building the Navigation Sensor System Interface (NAVSSI), its version of ECDIS for Navy surface ships. The NAVSSI is being built to satisfy the functional and performance specifications proposed by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Because of the need for interoperability with other Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) data sets for command and control, mission planning and weapons systems support, Digital Nautical Charts (DNC) will be distributed using the DOD standard for vector data: Vector Product Format. This paper will address DMA’s developmental approach, including DNC structure, content, layering, tiling, schedule, and availability of DNC product specifications and prototype data sets. |
