Candidate Navigation Sensor Configurations For Artillery Launched Projectiles

Kevin Shortelle and William Graham

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a simulation-based effort conducted to evaluate the feasibility of equipping artillery-launched projectiles with g-hardened navigation sensors. Two fundamental concepts are evaluated, designated as “dragster” and “guided”. The concepts are distinguished by the extent to which the projectile can maneuver and correct its ballistic trajectory during flight. Each concept includes several candidate navigation sensor configurations. The performance of each configuration is judged based on its ability to reduce ballistic dispersion relative to a conventional projectile. Results indicate that a two-fold reduction can be achieved for dragster configurations and a five-fold reduction can be achieved for guided configurations.
