Abstract: | This paper outlines the preliminary results obtained in a practical case implementation of a DGPS-based forest logging machinery navigation system in northeastern Canada. The project main objective is to identity tum- key, accurate and low-cost GPS-based navigation systems for the forest industry. Secondary objectives are to incor- porate desirable features lie GIS systems compatibility, friendly machine-operator interface, navigation to 3 m accuracy within a 50 km from a reference base station, and automatic geo-referenced field data acquisition. The discussion stresses the practical problems that were addressed concerning the implementation of our pilot system and the issues still to be resolved to put the system in commerciaI use. |
