The XR5 12 Channel Kernal

Anthony Haddrell

Abstract: Navstar’s 12-channel “black box” receiver finds use as both base station and mobile DGPS equipment, and in stand alone and post-processing roles. The boardset from the unit is now available to OEMs and system integrators who are concerned with high quality and low cost GPS performance. The paper describes the Kernel, and highlights the support equipment available (both hardware and software) for “power users”. The flexible interfacing provided allows virtually any information within the kernel to be accessed from a host programme. Some performance results and applications are reviewed. As more “niche” applications for GPS are discovered, flexibility of user equipment becomes more important to the integrator. The kernel provides anotherstep towards GPS userequipment becoming a world-wide commodity.
