Bandwith Efficient Platform Reporting DGPS System

Thomas Green, Patrick Davis

Abstract: A common requirement for DGPS is the collection of differentially corrected positions from a number of mobile platforms at a central base or control station. Various architectures for such systems exist. The solution chosen is often driven bythecommunication system available. The paper describes a communication efficient system suitable for use with a variety of transceiver equipments, such as those for use in the “itinerant” channels of the VHF or UHF bands. By novel use of the GPS receiver and modern features, a communication “network” is created using GPS as the synchronisation source. This paper presents the trade-offs and limitations of such a system, and shows its performance benefits over traditional solutions. Examples of such systems in use are examined, and the paper concludes with the investigation of a number of enhancements to extend further the possible applications.
