Abstract: A navigator efforts to handle the ship for safe navigation, and he/she judge it with navigational information, which are own ship's condition and her navigational environment. Moreover a navigator has responsibility of human lives and economical values under the judgment. We consider that a navigator keeps the mental workload in navigational watch keeping by the reason. An inland sea is usually the congestion sea area in Japan, and a navigator needs to keep the mental workload. We are challenging to develop the navigational system with Human-Systems cooperation at the standpoint of navigator's KANSEI(1)-(3) to reduce the mental workload, and we need the index to evaluate systems and navigator's art as the first step. The purpose of this paper is to find characteristics of navigator's mental workload with heart rate variability (R-R interval), and we carry out the experiment for six kinds of sea area in Japan. In our experiment, we measure subject's R-R interval with millisecond accuracy. Here, R-R interval is the interval R to R of a heartbeat, and it shows clearly the activity of human sympathetic nervous system from our studies(4)(5). Our pre-experiment carried out for arriving and leaving a port, a navigator needs to judge the rudder and engine control every moment. However, we do not its analysis for other navigational watch keeping yet. In this paper, we analyze characteristics on time and frequency domain of R-R interval, and we calculate mean, standard deviation (SD) and mean/SD on time domain, and LF, HF and SNS values on frequency domain as the index. Here, LF is the frequency component 0.01 to 0.15 Hz, and HF is the frequency component 0.15 to 0.40 Hz. As the result, we show relationship between navigational watch keeping in six kinds of sea area and navigator's mental workload with heart rate variability.
