Abstract: Previously, to model a complex-valued ionospheric scintillation perturbation in intensity and phase, we have applied a time domain colored noise process that transformed intensity and phase scintillation signals, generated from a bivariate gamma distribution, to the desired p f 1 power law noise spectral density. Observation of high levels of scintillation revealed that the slope p of the scintillation power spectral density (PSD) could reach as high as 5.5, much larger than its typical value of 2.5. While a linearized time domain model is satisfactory for typical values of p, higher values require non-linear modeling. To address this issue, a frequency domain nonlinear colored noise model is applied. For amplitude scintillation, a new histogram equalization method is developed that restores the skewed Nakagami probability density function characteristic destroyed during the power law noise spectral shaping process. The updated scintillation model is then applied to evaluate amplitude and phase scintillation on L5 Global Positioning System/Satellite-Based Augmentation System (GPS/SBAS) dual-frequency receivers under various receiver configurations. Receivers are modeled using computer simulations as well as analytical representations. The results of simulation using various code and carrier tracking loop bandwidths are compared to the analytical closed form solutions of the errors at the output of the phase lock loop (PLL) and the delay lock loop (DLL) of these receivers. The analytic formulas include the receiver tracking loop order and bandwidth, the ionospheric amplitude and phase scintillation parameters ( 4 S , ö ó ), and the strength (T) and slope (p) of the PSD of the phase scintillation signal. Scintillation effects on L1 and L2 semicodeless have been previously analyzed in [1,2].
