Integration of Navigation Systems for Fault Detection, Exclusion, and Integrity Determination - Without WAAS

John Diesel and Janet King

Abstract: It is first explained why GPS with WAAS may not be as safe as a VOR or ILS. As an alternative, this paper proposes a way of integrating navigation systems for fault detection, exclusion, and integrity determination, resulting in a navigation system at least as safe as VOR or ILS. This results in sole means of navigation for Non-precision approach on a global basis with an availability of 0.99999, without the necessity for ground-based availability prediction computer programs. This new approach uses only standard equipment which will be available on most future commercial airliners.
