Commercial Alternatives to WADGPS

Philip Stutes

Abstract: Commercial survey and positioning companies have successfUlly provided high accuracy positioning services for many years. To meet the rapid change in the positioning business due to the advanced capabilities offered by GPS, many of these companies invested in GPS related technology, and particularly in the development and implementation of differential GPS (DGPS) services. In recent years, those traditional suppliers of positioning services have been joined by new business enterprises, all of which are eager to capitalize on new markets for precise positioning services (Table 1). The North American market for DGPS is estimated to be worth $20 billion over the next seven to eight years, of which $4 billion is estimated to be generated by DGPS data services. This paper describes some of these existing commercial services.
