Abstract: | Satellite navigation is currently based on the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and/or the Russian GLObal Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). The basic deficiency of both systems is the lack of integrity, availability, continuity and accuracy in the signal-in-space (S1S). This is the main driver for setting-up augmentation systems like the Wide Area Augrnentation System (WAAS), the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) or Local Area Augmentation Systems (LAASS). The European contribution to GNSS-2 (Galileo) with the current baseline of reusing EGNOS requires that the S1S provides already integrity for Category I (CAT 1) precision approach and landing. Based on this requirement the fi.mdamental question to be answered is on appropriate integrity monitoring techniques (considering also integrity monitoring methods beyond the current baseline for GNSS-2) as well as the distribution of these techniques between ground, space and user segment. The paper is discussing basic concepts for ground-based integrity monitoring and for satellite-based autonomous integrity monitoring as well as the contribution of the user, e.g. by applying receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) like methods. Special emphasis is also put on the additional use of intersatellite ranging for onboard integrity monitoring. This discussion comprises a preliminary quantitative assessment of the estimated achievable service integrity monitoring levels too. |
