GNSS2 Navigation Payload Design: New Concepts and Enhancements

Stéphane Journo, Christophe Bourga, Bruno Lobert

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to present the current stud-ies at Alcatel Space Industries concerning the GNSS2 satellites navigation payloads. Several system studies have been carried out in 1998, particularly for CNES (French Space Agency) and DGA (General Delegation for Armament of French MOD). They allowed to identify the critical points of the payload, with their impact on design feasibility, cost, or platform specifications (thermal and magnetic constraints, power consumption and weight). The current development of a demonstration mock-up and the test results are aimed at solving these critical points. The demonstration mock-up includes a transmission chain of the navigation signal (reference, signal generation, am-plification, filtering). The feasibility analysis of the gen-eration of the new GNSS2 signal is under way (structure and power). It covers aspects such as modulation imple-mentation, phase noise, frequency stability, spurious line components, … It allows to converge towards the best choice of components and technology. The performance of group delay is also a key issue of the study. The bread-boarding of SSPA and filters allow to estimate the techni-cal feasibility and to identify the critical points in terms of technology associated to stability requirements. The measurement of achieved performance and temperature stability are crucial to the synchronisation function. The demonstration mock-up also allows to identify the technical limits that bound the signal integrity, as well as their origin (architecture, technology, components). Therefore, the current work leads to solve the critical points of the transmission chain of the navigation signal and to make the basis for the definition of system func-tions.
