A Modular Integrated Inertial/GPS System for Survey and Mapping Applications

Erik Lithopoulos

Abstract: Integrated inertial/GPS systems offer some significant technical advantages over stand-alone GPS. These advantages translate to productivity increases in a number of survey and mapping applications. Applanix’s Position and Orientation System (POS) is a modular integrated inertial/GPS system that is well suited for integration with a number of survey and map platforms. A comparison of GPS vs. inertial/GPS in the context of survey and mapping is presented here followed by a brief description of POS and two novel applications in the survey markets developed around POS.
