Abstract: The authors developed a "GPS navigation-type surveying system" using real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning and have been applying it mainly for land construction sur-veying. The system consists mainly of the terrain meas-urement function and the staking out function. This time we refined and expanded the GPS navigation-type surveying system, and have applied it for a dozen cases of building construction work. The major point of system expansion was functional enhancement for appli-cation to construction work considering cooperative use with CAD. Since most of the design and construction drawings for construction work are prepared by CAD methods while manual drawings are still generally used for engineering projects, the authors have used a method of extracting coordinates for foundation piles direct from CAD data. As a result, the time required for identifying coordinates has been reduced and reliability of work has been greatly increased over the cases dependent on man-ual work. Labor saving in the process of extraction of data on coordinates of staking out points from CAD data has substantially shortened the preparation step for stak-ing out. Daily extraction and checking of coordinates atapproximately 500 points is possible. Fast staking out at consecutive points guided by PC screen and marking with reinforcing bars enables stake installation at ap-proximately 30 points per hour or 250 points per day. As for accuracy, verification has revealed a standard de-viation of 7 mm either in the X or Y direction and a maximum variance of plus and minus 20 mm. The accu-racy has proved satisfactory for foundation piles or earth retaining piles. In addition, the extraction of point names and coordinates and superposition over the CAD drawing after data organization for checking prevents errors dur-ing coordinate input. This is a great benefit brought about by direct cooperation with CAD.
