Abstract: In recent years there has been international accep-tance of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) techniques, spurring widespread growth in the in-dependent development of so-called Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBASS). The ability of these distributed systems to provide complementary, coop-erative and independent information has increased in-terests in the worldwide interoperability of continu-ous navigation services and in the standardization of international aviation. This paper investigates SBASS interoperation from a technical viewpoint. The optimal strategies of infor-mation fusion are introduced for a general distributed SBASS’ architecture. Furthermore, integrity struc-tures and strategies are characterized. Then, the trade-offs between infrastructure and avionics imple-mentations are analyzed. The system design con-cepts and some fundamental issues are investigated and verified by using the National Satellite Test Bed (NSTB) network. Future perspectives on the inter-national SBASS interoperation are addressed as well.
