Characterisation of the Multipath Effects on the GPS Pseudorange and Carrier Phase Measurements

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to report the results coming from the multipath analyses carried-out at two different levels: first, by means of a dedicated experimental campaign, intended to isolate the multipath error sources from the rest of disturbances for different representative scenarios and, second, at simulation level, by developing a multipath which has allowed a better understanding of the disruptive nature of the multipath and possible multipath mitigation techniques. The multipath experimental analyses were based on an extensive measurement on-ground campaign covering different multipath characteristics (relative time delay, amplitude, phase and Doppler effect), different types of effects (reflected, diffracted and double-effects) and different types of scenarios (static and dynamic). Furthermore, repeatability analyses were also performed in order to isolate the multipath effects from the rest of disturbances. Following the multipath experimentation, a multipath model was developed, in order to cover not only the propagation of the multipath signal as an electromagnetic wave but also its effect in the GPS receiver performances (pseudorange and carrier phase). Three components can be identified: GPS signal propagation model (GTD approach), GPS antenna model and GPS receiver model. This model is being used for the investigations about the multipath impact, and possible mitigation techniques, in the Relative GPS (RGPS) based navigation concepts foreseen for the rendez-vous operations between International Space Station (ISS) and Automatic Transfer Vehicle (ATV).
