Abstract: | An experiment was conducted in 1997 on a 8 day cruise to determine the error characteristics of PPS data in a realistic at sea environment. One day with in extremely high multipath conditions and one day in moderate multipath conditions are examined. The real time PPS solutions behaved consistently with previous experiments. These indicate that the solution errors are dominated by the broadcast ephemeris errors. Multipath is also important. Techniques for mitigating these errors are studied. These include, use of atomic oscillators, phase averaged pseudoranges, averaging of measurements from multiple receivers, and modeling of broadcast ephemeris errors. A floor for real time measurement noise of about 0.7 m was established (given current orbit errors). For a PDOP of 3 this implies a 2 m solution error. |
